Original production for the 912 model ran from 1965 through 1969. The designation was resurrected for the 1976 model year only; Porsche offered the 912E Coupe for the American market. It was priced at $10,845 and designated in-house as the Type 923. This U.S.A.-only model had a brief production run of only 2,099 examples. Rising fuel prices and lowered U.S. speed limits helped make the 912E a practical model during this time frame. Production commenced by May 1975, after the 914/4 was discontinued, and before the water-cooled four-cylinder 924s had arrived. As noted in factory advertising the 912E was powered by the 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed (flat) four-cylinder, fuel-injected 914-derived engine "which took Porsche engineers two years to develop and refine,” and shared the chassis and body styling of the 911 Carrera 3.0 Coupe. This boxer engine developed 86 horsepower and pushed the car to a stated 109-mph. The Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system used is often referred to as the Air Flow Controlled (AFC) system later adapted for use in the 911 series. In June 1976 912E production ended in Zuffenhausen with the completion of number 2,099. This final 912E also became Porsche's last air-cooled four-cylinder production car. THIS CAR WAS PURCHACED FROM THE SECOND OWNER THAT DID A COMPLETE NO EXPENSE SPARED WINDOW AND MOTOR OUT RESTORATION. THIS CAR WAS BUILT TO REPLICATE A 930 TURBO USING AUTHENTIC PORSCHE FACTORY PARTS AND TOP QUALITY PPG PAINT. THE PAINT IS IN FLAWLESS CONDITION WITH NO MAJOR SCRATCHES OR BLEMISHES TO MENTION. INTERIOR OF THE CAR IS IN IMACULATE CONDITION. CAR IS NUMBERS MATCHING 4CYL 5 SPEED FACTORY AC BUT NOT HOOKED UP. ONLY THING NOT ORIGINAL IS THE TWIN WEBER CARB SET UP. IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK BEFORE BIDDING. $500.00 NON REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT DUE WITHIN 24 HRS OF AUCTIONS END. Outside of the engine compartment, only badging and interior fitments distinguished the 912 from the 911, with true base cars having a three-dial dash as opposed to the 911s five-dial unit. A four-speed all-synchromesh transmission was standard with a five-speed optional. Most of the other usual 911 options were available including special order paints, a sunroof, and the unique soft rear window Targa top. In 1969, like the 911, the 912 rode on a stretched wheelbase, with flared fenders and redesigned gauges. That model year proved the last year for the 912 initial run, as the Volkswagen-produced 914 was set to assume the entry-level role for Porsche in 1970. In 1976, however, with the demise of the 914, Porsche resuscitated the 912 (now called the 912E) for one year only. The car utilized the 2.0 liter VW Type IV motor that had previously seen service in the 914. Porsche 912s languished for many years due to have two fewer cylinders than the 911. More often than not, this affordability placed the 912 in the hands of unsympathetic owners who subjected the cars to all manner of thoughtless ‘improvements” and “updates.” As long-hood 911 and 356 prices have increased, so too have 912 prices, and the cars are now treated with more regard than they were even just a few short years ago. Surprisingly, 912s aren't any less expensive to maintain or restore than a 911s so it’s best to stick with the good examples." ng-class="" hvt-set-active="vm.isActive" ng-click="vm.trackHemmingsLink($event)" notouch="">

this is a 3 owner car. first owner had it for 8 years then sold it to his secretary who drove it for 29 years who sold it to me. i have every receipt back to 1976 when the car was new. this 912 has 104k original miles on its original motor. it has never been taken apart and still runs absolutely great. when i got it i had to go through the entire fuel system to get it back up and running. still has its original fuel injection which works great. i had to put a new muffler and the only option was a bursch so that's what it comes with. when i got the car it needed some rust repair on all 4 lower corners of the windshield and rear window. so i had that fixed and gave it a full window out respray. however, i did not get to sand and buff it. but the car still looks great so it never bothered me. all rubber seals and strips are new. i left off the rocker panels because i like the look. i have them and are included with the car. i rebuilt all the calipers. added stainless brake lines. this car originally came with only a 16mm front sway bar. i got rid of that and put sways from a 1976 911S front and rear. also i added a strut bar. the car handles great. the 14" fuchs are in great condition. The interior is also in awesome condition. the only thing that it could use is to recover the steering wheel but otherwise i would almost call it mint. everything works. all gauges, windows, sunroof, wipers, horn, pioneer radio. the only thing that i have not fixed is the a/c i have been driving this car around for over 6 months and it is a truly reliable driver. i just have way too many other cars to play with and i can't keep them all. car is located in hollywood, fl and inspections are welcomed and encouraged. $500 deposit is due within 24 hours and balance within 7 days thanks for looking

The "Prototyp" Museum collection in Hamburg, Germany includes a 912E preseries vehicle constructed utilizing a 911 Chassis No. 911 520 1617 and four-cylinder VW-Porsche 90HP 2.0L Type 4 similar to the late-model 2.0L 914/4.[2] Once in production, the 912E was powered by an 86 bhp 2.0 L Volkswagen air-cooled engine, refined with a new Bosch L-Jetronic (Air Flow Controlled) fuel injection system. The 912E occupied the entry-level position left vacant by the discontinuation of the 914, while the new 924 – another Porsche-Volkswagen joint effort vehicle and the 914's official replacement – was being finalized and put into production. During the production run of May 1975 to July 1976, Porsche manufactured nearly 2,100 of the 912E, targeted to the United States market.

Exterior / Interior VIN: 45876100000000000 2 Doors, , Coupe, 4 Cylinders, Manual Inventory ID: 000000 Vehicle Description For the past 50 years or so the Porsche 912 has been wrongfully percieved as the 911s "little brother." This is somewhat of a misperception as the 912 is more accurately described as the 911s "older brother." This arises from the fact that the 912 uses the same powerplant as the 911s predecessor - the venerable Porsche 356. The lineage of the engine makes the 912, in many ways, far superior to the early 911s. In illustration of this point, Duane Spencer, author of The Complete Porsche 912 Guide, wrote the following: "... the 912 had very few problems - especially when compared to the early 911s. They have proven to be very robust cars, primarily because the engine was fully developed with the 356 series, and they benefited from the extra body strength built in to handle the weight and power of the 911." Porsche began producing 356s in 1948 using technology that was first implemented in the late 30s and early 40s on the Volkswagon Type 1 a/k/a the Beetle and the WWII era Kuebelwagon. The basic parameters of both 356s and 912s are identical - small displacement, air cooled engines mated to transaxles which push a light weight, low drag chassis down the road at respectable speeds. This formula - rear engine, small displacement, light weight, low drag - was perfected in four iterations of the 356, i.e., the pre-A, the A, the B and the C, and it remains one of Porsches hallmarks to this day (excluding the Cayenne, Panamera and Macan, of course!). In 1964, Porsche revealed the 911 as the sucessor to the 356. It followed Porsches basic formula but added an aerodynamic and structual integrity component that was missing from the 356. Somewhat obviously, the 911 was a huge sucess and it continues that success to this day. However, the 911 had a huge drawback: it cost an astronomical 22,900 DM (about $5,725 in 1965 US dollars or $40,876 in 2014 dollars). In comparison, a 356 1600 SC Coupe only cost 16,450 DM ($4,112.50 in 1965 US dollars or $29,363.25 in 2014 dollars). Thus, Porsche needed to produce a lower cost variant of the 911. In response to this need, Porsche took the 356s powertrain, placed it in a 1965 911 body and, viola!, the 912 was born. The 912 employed the same engine as the 356C and sold at about the same price 16,250 DM (thats $4,062.50 in 1965 US dollars or $29,006.25 in 2014 US dollars). Given the fact that the 912 was visually identical to the 911 and cost about $11,000 less, the 912 quickly began to outsell the 911. In fact, in 1966, Porsche sold almost two times as many 912s as 911s. The 912 remained in continuous production from 1965 through 1969 (with a breif revival in 1976). After production of the car ceased, 912s did not fare well in the marketplace. The cars suffered from the "little brother" stigma (a stigma which clouds the true value of the Boxter to this day), and further suffered at the hands of owners who - all too often - could not afford to properly maintain them. This led to a situation where the costs of restoration far outstripped the value of the vehicle and owing to their non-galvanized bodies, early 912s slowly sunk into rusty graves. Fortunately, begining about 10-15 years ago, collectors began to notice and appreciate the 912s for both its aesthetics and its mechanical reliability. Further, over the course of the past 5 years, 356 and early 911 prices have begun to skyrocket. This led to rapidly appreciating values and what was once seen as the "bargain Porsche" is now a highly collectible Porsche. The present 912 was acquired from its second ower, WS, who lived in Michigan. WS acquired the car from its first known owner, DJR, of Chesaning, Michigan. The car was originally painted Gulf Blue and faint traces of the original paint can still be seen under the cars rear decklid (see the pictures below). At some unknown point in time the cars first owner converted the car from from a Porsche color to Dark Blue Metallic, Paint Code No. 45779LH, which is a Ford/Lincoln color. In addition, a white Porsche script was added to the lower rocker panels on both sides in an attempt to make the car resemble a 1967 911RS. The Fuchs rims were added in furtherance of this attempt as the car should have been originally equipped with hubcaps and steel wheels. The cars interior was originally white and the car is believed to retain its original interior to this day. The interior is outfitted with 2 fairly rare (and highly desirable) options: 1) a wood rimmed steering wheel; and 2) headrests. As the interior is original, it is not in pristine condition but it remains servicable and can be used "as is" for many years to come. While in WS possession, the engine and transmission were rebuilt by ODonalds On the Spot Repair in Lansing, Michigan. According to WS, the engine is NOT original to the car and was taken from a 1968 912. The engine number is 1285247 which, accoding to several internet resources, appears to be from the 1968 production run. Thus, this car is NOT equipped with its original engine and is NOT numbers matching. The engine rebuild consisted of a complete, split case teardown and the replacement of the crankshaft, rods, bearings, pistons and cylinders. In the rebuild process, a big bore kit was installed. Thus, the engines displacement has been increased from a stack 1600 to 1750 ccs. At the same time, new Weber carburators were installed. The original carbs are no longer available. Based on the increased displacement and better carbs, I estimate that the engine currently produces roughly 75 hp. The transmission is a 5 speed with a "dogleg 1st" (meaning first gear is below reverese gear on the extreme lower left). This was an optional upgrade in 1967 and the transmission is believed to be original to the car. Photos of the rebuild are pictured below and both the photos and the repair receipts documenting the rebuild will be included with the sale. At the same time the engine was rebuilt, the front and rear wheel bearings were replaced and a new clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing were installed. According to the prior owner and as stated in the maintenance documenting this work, the vehicles mileage at the time of the rebuild was roughly 54,000. As the current mileage is approximately, 67,000, the powertrain has less than 13,000 miles! Please note, the prior owner informed me that this vehicle was sold with ACTUAL MILES. While I have not been able to independently verify the prior owners representations regarding mileage, I can absolutely confirm that the powertrain is low mileage and performs impeccably. If you would like to verify this then: 1) ask to see the maintenance records; and 2) please go to my YouTube channel - thebavarianmotors - where I have posted two videos of me driving the car. After acquiring this car, I changed the oil and the oil filter and cleaned the air cleaners. I also relaced the rear shocks and then drove the car for roughly 350 miles on a 12 hour trip. On this trip, I averaged 60 - 70 mph and had no significant issues with the car. After completing the trip, I examined the car for oil leaks and found a small leak on one push rod tube on the number 3 cylinder (near the head). It is a miniscule leak that does not leave drops on the floor but it is present. Other than this small leak, I have not seen the engine leak oil. I also replaced the windshield wiper transmission / armature and bought (but have not installed) new turn signal lenses for both the front and rear of the car. After relacing the windshield wiper armature, I had the car inspected at a local inspection station and it was given a "fully operational" inspection sticker. This means that all safety features of the car, e.g., windshield wipers, brake lights, turn signals, high and low beam headlights and etc., are in fully operational condition. Please note, this car will be sold with a "bonded title." This form of title is identical to a regular title but is backed by an insurance policy or "bond" which guarantees that I own the vehicle and that it is capable of being sold by me. This title is fully negotiable and is recognized in all 50 states. If you have any questions about the status of the title then please feel free to call. In summary, this particular car is the perfect fit for the astute collector looking for a car he can drive as often as he likes without destroying the inherent (and appreciating value) of the car. Its major strength is its mechanical condition which is exemplary. Its major drawbacks are: 1) the paint - which is driver quality and "wrong" for the car; and 2) miscellaneous interior cosmetics. If you are lookiing for a concours level 912, you should keep looking. However, if you are looking for a 912 to drive and improve over time (primarily by painting the car the "right" color) then you should give this car serious consideration as this car represents the best of what an early Porsche should be - pleasant to drive, highly competent and fairly simple to maintain. Given the astronomical prices of early 911s and 356s, this car also represents one of the best values on the Porsche market and is certain to appreciate over time. Please note, I have thououghly inspected the floor pan of this car and have not found any sign of: 1) prior pan repairs; 2) active rust infiltration; or 3) prior accident damage. Thus, from my perspective, there are no signs that the structural inegrity of this car has been compromised in any fashion. Please see the photos below to verify my opinions.
